ATi

Who here has an Ati gfx card? As you know I have been waiting for Nvidia to release the new 400 series cards based on Fermi. I have been quite disappointed with the lateness of them arriving and the fact no information about them is coming out of Nvidia... In this case I'm sure no news is bad news. And I have a feeling they are going to be very very expensive when they arrive. So I'm starting to consider something from Ati instead. I was planning to spend about £300 on the nvidia which would get me an Ati 5870. And these according to the reviews on OCUK kick some arse.

I have never used Ati to have no idea what they are like. Any comments from you lot about them would be appreciated. Also Nvidia cards have the Physx and CUDA engines for computing phyics stuff. Would I be missing out on this with Ati as this is one of the big reasons I wanted the Fermi card. The physx demo's on Youtube are amazing!

I have an ATI card Willo, and have no probs whatever.
AtI Radeon HD 4870x2.
Drivers are nice and easy to to install too, and with the latest you can reinstall over your old ones.

Only problem I have had is with BC2, I get a slight flickering on water or windows, but I'm gonna try to disable the catalyst control centre, this is easy just by putting a tick in the box.
Ok just tried that and now no flickering of windows or water, just a simple tick in the box has cured it .

I too was a bit weary with ATI, as I had always got NVIDIA, but years ago I did have an ATI, and remembered how good it was, so took the plunge, so far I have not been dissapointed.

ATI are top dogs at the moment. I have never owned one Willo, but IF I was in the market now (which I'm not as everything runs just nicely thanks), I would get an ATI 5850.

I assume from your recent posts under BF:BC2 server that you will hold off upgrading and try DX9 instead, so perhaps this thread has been superceded!

They are hard to come by, because of manufacturer problems with the chips.
I managed to get one, although it's not the standard one, after a thorough search and accepting a higher price.

Still waiting for another motherboard though...

I'd still like to upgrade... infact I'm chomping at the bit to do it! But I'm going to try and take your advice and restrain myself since BFBC2 seems to play quite nicely in DX9 mode.

I didn't do any upgrades last year (I normally do something major once a year), so perhaps I'll upgrade my mobo and CPU instead. I'd like to get an i7 to increase my SETi@Home crunching power. This would also have the benefit of extending the life of my 8800GTS too.

And besides if I wait long enough Villan is bound to be selling off 200 series card at knock down prices.

Have a look at this hierarchy table from Toms hardware.

for the record, mine is a Geforce 280.

Crikey! (as Falky would say), my 8800GTX is right up there; not bad for a card I bought in 2007! I'm quite pleased with that, makes the whole spending £300 on it seem quite reasonable.
