I got my Western Digital 320GB External HD ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) today. I have to say its an absoluty beautiful design, and the light on the front is just great fun to watch. I have to confess to being a complete tit though after realising my mobo doesn't have a firewire port which is one of the reasons I went for this version. I used to but I took it out and I thought my new one had one build in but hey, its taking USB speeds to the extreme and trasfering 170GB at speeds I never thought possible.

The other thing thats excellent is the installation. All the software is on the device so you just plug it in and it installs its self. When I get my new PC (which isn't going to be for at least 6 months or more) I'll have to remember to get a firewire borad. I'll see what the firewire is like on my mac though.

I'm interested to see how streaming movies from it will go though considering USB was designed far better to read than write and if its writing at this speed there should be no trouble.

The otehr thing I was inpressed at (and possibly the reason for the excellent speeds) was the quailty of the cables provided. The USB cable is about twice as think as most USB cables that come with most other devices and the firewire is like a tree trunk which makes me even more anxous to try it out. The stacking design is so well hidden it took me a while to notice it but becuase of the texture of the rubber which is quite grippy I would guess they stack very well and quite high.

Overall I'm very impressed with it and it looks lovely on my desk. Would highly recomend it.

Have had a (modest) 80Gb USB HDD for about a year now, and it's a little beauty when it comes to backup/recovery of files, or transfer of files from one machine to another.

Well worth the money.

They are great things, these external hard drives. I love my Western Digital Passport drive, which although only 40 gig, is very useful indeed.
