I'm expecting a big cheque from L&G and want to go shopping again. So I'm after some RAM as Col once described mine as "forkin mince" or "foo-kin mince"! Anyone got any suggestions as to what to buy.

I need 2G of DDR400 type PCR3200 stuff, and it has to be quality ram, no more cheap mince!

Also I might also get another HDD, any suggestions on this? Anything SATA or SATA2 which is reliable and over 200GB is fine. Althought I aint interested in another bastard Maxtor DiamondMax... Bastard things!

Thanks.

Corsair suck compared to Mushkin, and are more expensive. I can't see what the big Corsair rave is when there is much better sutff on the market, often for less.

But yeah, Western Digital HD.

[Only registered and activated users can see links] you could shop around for the price but that stuff is the best.

Or if you want to overclock: [Only registered and activated users can see links]

It depends how long you have been around, you being abit young than most of us (ok, all of us), you will not remember the days of really cheap but really shit memory that would fuck up a lot, not always straight away either.

Corsair were one of the first companies, if not the first company to offer top end memory backed by a lifetime warrenty that they would actually honor. Because of the extremly high standards they set in the past and still set, anyone who has used them for a long time will recommend them. So it is a brand that has a reputation build over years of excellence. A reputation like that is hard to come by, they live off it. Why take a chance elsewhere if you already got what is probably as good as it gets, regardless of the small premium?

I know Corsair have a good long term rep but other companies has surpassed them and I say Mushkin becuase they offer a lifetime warranty, have faster timings and clock better if you're into that. Maybe they used to be the best but they'res better around now for the same or less money.

Never heard of Mushkin, how long have they been around? I've never used Corsair before so have no particular loyalty to them. That said they would have been my first choice. I'm just not sure which sort to buy, is it a case of the more you pay the better you get?

I'm now off to see if I can find any information on this Mushkin stuff.

Another vote for Corsair from me too. They are the BMW of RAM:sqwink: and it was an obvious choice for my current system. According to Custom PC mag Patriot, Mushkin and OCZ are also supposed to be good 'enthusiasts' RAM

As to hard drives, I like my Seagate Barracuda. I've also read that Samsung Spinpoint drives are very fast.

Right... a baby on the way and he's off spending on his PC kit, how much have you budgeted for food this time ???

Msuhkin are know for they're extremely tight timings. Corsair are a good all round RAM (well at least the value stuff is) but the XMS is over priced because its pretty and because they can. Muskkin (and G.Skill) are the cream of the performance RAM industry and the reason I would go with them is becuase its not more expensive than Corsair but it is better.

I've heard good things about Samsung drives in the past and this review has sold me on them:

A site called Komplett.co.uk are selling a 250GB P120S drive for £49.00, anyone used them before (Komplett that is)?

That's the one that is a best buy in Computer Buyer Mag - the SP2504C (and referred by me above).

This Seagate drive is VFM:[Only registered and activated users can see links] 5 year warranty as well :)

In my recent system upgrade I put in 2 GB of G.Skill DDR2 PC5400 ram, it is good and supposedly very overclockable. I had been using generic ram before.

PC2-5300(333Mkz)

Cas# latency 4.0 clocks
Ras# to Cas# delay 4 clocks
Ras# Precharge 4 clocks
Cycle time (Tras) 12 clocks
Command Rate 2T

I haven't overclocked it yet but may be tempted:shock:

AMD Athalon 64 X2 4600+
Asus M2N-SLI deluxe nForce 570 SLI
2Gb G.skill PC5400 DDR2 ram
Asus 7600GS 512Mb PCI-e Graphics

Would that be installable in my motherboard... It says DDR400 on the board (AsRock Dual DATA2)... which I thought was PC3200?

How do you measure bandwidth?

I'm ready to buy. Where did you get yours, and did you make sure it was the best deal before you bought it?

They don't do it anymore, nor do Overclockers or a lot of places. They stopped making it when DDR2 came out.

Just ordered that Mushkin, should be with me by the 12th... lovely jubly! Got it from Tekheads as it was about 40 quid cheaper than Chillblast.

Like I probably said I do like the service at Tekheads and they offer competative pricing.

Also they always have a guy sitting on msn to help you which I though was a nice idea.
