A long time ago you both mentioned some software you ran on XP to skin it. What was it called? I'm completely fed up with the default style and want something new... preferably free, but I'll buy if its any good. What are you using?

I didnt run any software... i just changed the default dll in XP (forget the name), but that then lets you change the default skin.

So have you downloaded another skin? I get the option of the default blue and green, silver or green... Nothing else. From memory I think you had something funky looking going down.

uxtheme.dll is the file that needs patched.

Excellent, the method of updating the uxtheme.dll file didn't work following that link. It appears that XP automatically replaces it immeadiately after you've put the new one in using its backup. The workaround is to delete the backups or boot into a recovery console using your XP disk (which is what I did). This explains what to do:

And I now have a lovely new black and shiny look to XP curtesy of DevianArt. Some nice ones here too:

Looks like a vairation of media centre (royale) theme. Nice though, no pissing about with all that annoying software like sytem XP and crappy widgets all over the place, just a much needed splash of paint.

Looks almost identical to the one I'm using downstairs and at work. Except my start button is green, not that weird browny orange.
