Can anyone see any reason why ebuyer are selling a AMD Athlon 64 4600 Dual Core AM2 processor for 40 quid less than a AMD Athlon 64 3800 Dual Core AM2? If it fits that Asrock SATA2 board Rob was telling me about, I'm getting one.

I buy practically all my gear from Ebuyer and their pricing for some products can change almost on a daily basis. The lesson I have learnt is if you see a product at a good price and your'e happy with it then go for it. On the occasions I've ummmed and aaahhhed it has invariably then sold out or the price has gone up .....They also do a 'happy hour', where some real bargains can be found.

You splashing out mentally or 'for real' this time Willo :sqoot: :sqshockedl: ?

For real this time Wags. I was talking to Rob on MSN before I went away and he told me about his upgrade which sounds very reasonable as I can keep most of my existing components. What was putting me off before was that I'd have to have bought a new mobo, cpu, memory and graphics card. However the mobo he's recommended has a PCI-E and AGP graphics slots, plus it uses the same memory I'm using now. So I only need to spend a fraction on the money for a mobo and CPU. So I'm trying to work out what CPU I want and where I want to get it.

I'm umming and arring over the AMD 939 3800+ X2 at £105 or the AMD 940 4600+ at £159! I like the idea of the 4600... but that low price is putting me off, somethings got to be wrong with it.

The mobo I've already decided on (same as Robs) - AsRock Dual SATA2:

Not only is the 939Dual ready to support Athlon 64 X2 CPUs out of the box, it also features dual graphics slots. It isn't an SLI or CrossFire board though; it has both a 16x PCI-E slot and an AGP 8x slot, a combination we've never seen before. This means that if you own an aging CPU, such as an Athlon XP, but have a respectable AGP graphics card, such as a GeForce 6800 GT, that you're reluctant to junk, then the 939Dual is the perfect upgrade option. You can get a new, technologically advanced CPU such as an Athlon 64, and keep your current graphics card until you can afford, or are tempted by, a new PCI-E card.

Thats exactly the situation I'm in. The upgrade will cost me about £200 instead of my £600 estimate. I can then upgrade my memory, graphics and mobo (again) progressively later.

nothing is wrong with it willo thats the price they are now since the release of conroe by intel amd have halfed the price of their chips , they had to intel chips are on the market now and were cheaper but more powerfull
so amd have had to lower price to try and compete
if your into amd or intel its a great time to be upgrading your cpu these prices wont last forever

Intel reduced the prices because they have $1 billion worth of chips warehoused that they have to shift. AMD have had to shift prices down on the back of this, the speed:GBP probably is still in AMD's favour, although it is hard to tell.

OK, I've almost made my mind up... just need to confirm a detail before I make the order. I'm going with OverClockers. I'm definately having the AsRock Dual SATA2 mobo which comes in at an amazing £40 (including VAT). So thats the mobo sorted.

For the processor I either want a AMD 939 4400+ X2 CPU or the AMD 939 4600+ X2. Both are about £160 and are within a couple of pound of each other.

The detail I was referring too is the L2 cache. According to someone on eBuyer who did a review the 4400+ has double the L2 cache that the 4600+ has. And someone told me at work today that this makes a big difference:

First of all, dont buy this chip. Thats right, dont. Get the 4400+ which has 1mb cache for each core (the 4600+ has 512kb for each core)
The 4600+ does run 200mhz faster but...

I overclocked my 4400+ to 2.4ghz easily. Making it a 4800+.
And it still runs cooler than my 3800+ did (Newcastle core) It even uses less power. How impressive is that?

When I've confirmed that the 4400+ has 1mb cache per core with OverClockers, then I'll make the order.

Unless anyone has any better ideas for £205?

It is done! A quick call to OverClockers confirmed that the 4400+ does indeed have 1mb cache per core. So the order has been made. It will hopefully be with me tomorrow. Hoorah! Better get some shit on eBay to pay for it.

Yeah looked at the Conroes on OC, but the prices put me off (especially the 6600). And if I bought one I'd be forced to change my RAM and Graphics card as well as the CPU and mobo... I'd be back to £600-700!

I've now paid £214 all in (including delivery) for a big leap in performance (my current CPU is a worn out Athlon XP 2400+), and I have a cheap future upgrade path. Cant wait to try it out.

I'm donating my old mobo and processor to my in-laws. They have a crappy 1Ghz machine which is slow as buggery so a 2400+ to them would be a nice improvement.

Could Col tell me if he thinks my Standard Life shares will go up or down this month, judging on the strength of the Pound over the Yen???

I was a bit unsure about your recommendation last month on me buying £10000 of Railtrack shares though.

Best regards

Well considering Standard Life is UK based then you dont need to worry about the Yen.... However as they are strongly linked to the banking sector which has seen a recent drop in price it is not a good time to buy if you looking for a quick fix, however, this makes the yield value pretty strong, good for long term investment if you like to collect dividends :).

But thats all based on a fleeting glimpse of the teletext the other day and dont read too much into it!

PS I think railtrack was dissolved several years ago!
