Emergency Upgrade Help

I'm upgrading my mobo to PCI-E, just took the AMD Athlon out of my old mobo, with heatsink and fan still attached. Can I put it into the new mobo with the HS and fan still attached? I can line it up, so could force it in, but dont know if I'll damage it. The problem is I cant lift the lever on the socket to do it properly with the HS and FAN still attached. So if I need to do this, I guess I'll have to prise the CPU off the HS... Any advice on hold to prise it off appreciated if I need to do this. Infact any advice at all would be great. Been trying to call Col, but he must be in a dead spot of his mobile companys coverage.

Nevermind, maverick that I am, I just slipped a knife in there and twatted it off. Just gotta figure out how to reattach the HS and fan now. I'll keep you posted.

Crap, my Gfx card needs two 6 pin power supplies, dont think my PSU supports those as I only have 2 cables with 4 pins on them. Looks like a trip to PC Ripoff World is in order.

I may be wrong Willo but it used to be the case that just any old psu for £40 might be an excellent way to screw your system. You should ask around in here but a decent psu is a must.

Got to have a decent PSU as I found out to my cost, bought one for my last PC that was the correct wattage but was also very cheap lasted 2 months and a mate recommended one that was nearly 3 times the price and never had a problem with it.

Can't you buy pin adapters, thought you could buy cheap 4pin to 6 pin power adapters ?

I have become Willo's bits of PCs provider, so I may be able to offload a 550w psu. At the moment he's using borrowed molex convertors and struggling to get XP to boot.

I had the same problem with my old PC, I could get a nice 500 watt PSU for it, but the board would not support that amount.
If I had attached it, no doubt would have melt down :oops::oops:

I didn't know that Maggot, thanks for the heads up. In which case I'll have that PSU off you Mr Villan, may as well, half my PC is your old kit anyway! I'll pop over and collect it some time soon, probably not tomorrow though... and maybe not Friday either...

XP working now, after clean install, its just taking me hours to get the bastard updates downloaded and installed.

willo i would suggest to stop wasting money on cheap fixes that dont work, and end up in hours of your time wasted and try and be a bit more strategic and plan ahead and dont be impatient.. i used to be like that and its very expensive in money and more importantly your time

Willo, as much as i would like to say what you are doing is a good expeirence for you, but from past expeirences i would say think clearly about where you are heading. Building yourslef a hybrid system could possibly cause you more problems in the future. Its good that villan is offering to help you out, but i was you i would i think about maybe looking into a new system. You could get yourself a half decent system for about £300 which you could build on. Buying a psu, g/card etc with other expenses and time could fetch back about that cost anyhow.

Do as you wish mate but i hope you dont waste your money then find that you end up with a screwed system.

Ave got a shit hot Aluminium thermaltake case here yer can have needs a PSU like but all the good cases do,and a 80 gig HDD, sell yer PC complete replacing your HDD or HDD's with the one i'll give yer and yer halfway there already to getting a dogs knackers PC instead, what ram yer got in yer system?? DDR or DDR2 if yer got DDR and wanna transfer that to yer new PC ( i doubt new pcs run on DDR now)ave got some DDR spare too.

Dont want fack all for um but yer gotta collect lol, or Spitty works in Birmingham every week poor bastard someone has too i suppose he could drop um off

Odin, thats very kind of you. I'd be very interested in your case if the offer still stands? I'm ok for memory and HDD's though. I've got a couple of half decent SATA drives and some good ram (at least I think its half decent) that I bought last year.

Infact my PC aint that bad, it looks a bit tatty, but its probably only the PSU and case thats letting it down... and perhaps the sound card... and DVD writer. But other than that, its OK.

Heres what I have:

Windows XP Home (full - retail)
ECS KN1 SLI mobo (from Villan)
AMD X2 4400 dual core 64bit CPU (stock cooler and fan)
Mushkin 2GB DDR HP3200 (DDR400) High Performance Dual Channel Kit
Creative Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card
2x Samsung 250GB SATA2 HDDs
2x 80GB IDE HDD's of some description (taking these out though)
Old LG Single Layer DVD writer of some description.
Case - Only remaining remnant of a PC I bought about 5 years ago.
400WATT PSU of some description (replacing with Villans )


I think Spitty works just down the road from me, so it would be ideal if he could bring it down! Cheers! I'll make it up to you next Blackpool meet!

If you wish to take Odin up on is offer thet him know ASAP, I am in Halesowen most Thusdays and will transport it that far, you will have to come and collect from there. They will not hold any items for you so will need to get over there to meet in person (yikes).
I have no problem in gettings the goods that far for you. You will have to make the time to get over to Halesowen (B62 8DJ).
