Ive reinstalled COD 1 but as some of you know i can't get it to work in any servers, i reinstalled it at least 7 times yesterday removed the whole lot including the COD folder and ran registry cleaner but it still doesn't work.
The problem i have is it lets me in for a few minutes then i get the message cod.exe has encountered a problem and must shut down and do i want to send the report to Microsoft, the programme then shuts down but leaves my screen extremely bright so that i can only just see the desktop icons.
There is then no way i can alter the screen and have to reboot my pc.
If i go in the multiplayer options and start my own server the thing works perfectly, its only when i try to join a server.
Like i say i can play for a few minutes then it just packs up, i will take out my graphics card tomorrow and run it using the onboard graphics to see if that helps but if anyone else has any (sensible) ideas like buy a new pc :) i'd be grateful to hear them.

is your direct x the newest one?
it should be the c version.
maybe reinstalling it just incase might do the trick.
its definately something to do with your graphics.
id put money on it being your directx though. might be worth going back to the older b version and trying that out.
Benny
17-04-2006, 03:23 PM
Ok, i realise its something to do with my graphics and i suspected directx myself, i'll install an old version off my graphics card driver disc and see what happens when i get home tonight.
And for some reason ive got a stinking headache this afternoon, wonder if it is anything to do with the fact i was still drinking at 0400 this morning.

Stupid suggest #231:
Check that none of the CoD1 files have permissions set to "read only". I could not run RO for this reason at times.
You can reset the permissions by clicking on the CoD program folder and then clicking on "properties" uncheck the "read only" botton and finally confirm that you want to apply the alteration to all files and folders.

Ok, when i get home i'll try that, cheers.

Right this morning i removed my graphics card and fired up the pc, went into COD and the same thing happened, it shut itself down and left my screen looking like i'd turned the gamma right up, so it isnt anything to do with my graphics card, i'm going to reinstall and try to put an older directx in the thing, but while i'm messing if anyone has any ideas please feel free to post.

Ive been searching google for the error report, it is "pbcl.dll" that appears to be causing my problem, the only thing is from all the shit ive read no-one seems to come up with a fix for it and there appears to be loads of things that can cause it, so i'll have to keep trying the numerous fix's to try and get the thing working again.

Yes Trust i have reinstalled COD, numerous bloody times :)
and the fault seems to be a punkbuster one, i have been on the punkbuster site and updated the punkbuster but i must have something wrong somewhere, i'll keep trying the things ive found on google, and as they say "if all else fails fuck it buy a new pc"

Benny, have you tried running CoD1 with your firewall off?
Benny
18-04-2006, 06:20 PM
Yes Falky my xp firewall is off and don't use any other firewall, if you lot see me joining and leaving cod tonight it will be because i am trying to fix the fucker.
Ive downloaded loads of stuff off google so mebe i can get it working, if not col had better get RA working :)
What is annoying though is it works for a few minutes before crashing, which must be something to do with punkbuster checking something.

Benny you say it`s a pbcl.dll,so it`s a direct libery link file,is this missing??,or is it corrupt?.
Only a guess,but it looks like a punkbuster client file.
Have you tried doing a search for this file?.
Just a thought run regedit,and do a search in there for it,once you have typed the info in just keep pressing f3 this will carryon the search through the registry.
By the way do a backup of the registry before you do this,always handy incase you make a mistake.
It might be worth doing a search also for any punkbuster files then deleting them all,when you`ve done that start with a complete fresh install of pb.
Hope this helps.

if your using a router have u forwarded the right ports??

when you uninstall COD for about the 50th time delete the folder C:\Program Files\Call of Duty to make sure you start from scrach when you gonna reinstall as l think it leaves behind the PB folder after you have removed the game..
anyway make sure you have not got a other program running in the background that could interfear with PB causing your game to crash...
below helpfull info from EvenBlance's web site >>> [Only registered and activated users can see links]
My game crashes with an error in pbcl.dll or a General Protection Fault. Why?
This issue can be from a program that conflicts with PB. There are a few known program that cause this:
* Get Right
* DU Super Controler
* Macro Toolsworks
* Girder 3.2
* PRTG Traffic Grapher
* MS Office: ctfmon.exe (rarely)
* CyberCorder: cybrcrdr.exe
* Paessler Router Traffic Grapher: prtg4.exe
* 3dnasys.exe
* mIRCStats
Closing those programs, or any like them that contain user or kernel level debuggers should stop the problem.

Cheers Russel, i did all that already.
Last night i uninstalled COD, removed the folder, ran reg cleaner, then i installed cod, then 1.3 patch, then 1.4 patch, then 1.5 patch, then i updated punkbuster and the same thing has happened, it lets me in for a minute then crashes so i'm back to square one.
Does anyone know which ports need forwarding in my router for COD, just in case its that, i tried to install my old adsl modem today but my pc did not like it all, i had reboot the thing from the windows disc and then do a system restore for some unknown reason.
just one more thing, how do i get the console down the ~ key doesn't seem to do it, i read i can put a little line in te thing from the console and get punkbuster to work that way, i just can't get the console down.
just read this thread about the kick for ignoring md5tools you get benny and it might be something we can try server side
"I suggest all admins who are having this problem in yours servers, set pb_sv_md5toolfreq to a value greater than 10 (60 was the previous default value). "
it might not be that but if russ or col think there would be no problem in changing the setting to 60 then its worth a go
i read it here

its actually already set at 120, i assume its time is seconds when each scan occurs.

If your machine has lagged out or locked up, it will not return the md5 queries.
His kick for ignoring queries is the knock on effect from something else.
I reckon it is related to his gfx card myself.

Right well my problem is all sorted now.
Who would have thought it was just the main board fluffle valve that was seized in the open position, this in turn caused the data carrying detector module diode to refuse access to the enhanced connectivity data carrying interface, and as everyone knows punkbuster cannot run in this mode.
Anyway after a small dose of WD40 i'm back up and running and i must say its better than ever and its nice to be back on COD1.
Oh and thanks to Mr_Col, aka God for all the help in this matter.
