Anyone watch Bad Lads Army last night? If not dont worry it was only the first one, there's another month to go. Its showing on ITV1 and ITV2 and I highly recommend it. Its basically a couple of truck loads of pond life that have volunteered to spend a month in a 1950's style army training camp, being authentically trained in an 1950's stylee complete with cough and drop medical exam.

It really is very interesting stuff. There are plenty of blokes in there giving it the big I am with attitude, especially one fella called Luke Brown. You can tell a lot of em aren't used to being told what to do and this experience is defintely the mother of being told what to do. Cant fault the real army sarg's Murray and Nauyokas or whatever his name is, very hard but fair.

I'm basically watching it to see how it turns out. Nauyokas seems to think they'll see a new side of themselves and have a little more respect for others when its over. Will be interesting to see if he's right.

From ITV1 site:

First in a new series following the format of 2002's Lads Army in which 30 troublemakers aged between 18 and 24 from different social backgrounds and areas of Britain are put through four weeks of 1950s-style military training and an education in traditional values in order to put their lives back on track. Corporal Murray and Corporal Nauyokas dole out the punishments, while footage is intercut with celebrities telling anecdotes of their own experiences undergoing National Service. In this edition, the lads arrive on base where skateboarder Scott Simpson immediately caves under pressure, and Luke Brown swears he'll beat the system. Narrated by Dennis Waterman.

un-interesting but true:

One of my mates was supposed to be in it as "mr Oribble" :) the oringinal cast of instructors were put under polite pressure to not take part from certain departments in London. Reason being, in the wake of those nasty press bits after gulf 2, of treatment of POW's. It was thought that any soldier still serving with the "colours" may atract unwanted attention from various sources'.

They are paid a very nominal fee + travel expences etc...

Joe (ps i missed it too)

Hummm, interesting Joe. I'm surprised the trainers aren't paid that well they seem to do a stirling job!

Shame you missed this first one. This Luke Brown person is a real piece of work. He doesn't like being told what to do by the trainers. Because of his attitude one of trainers had a word with him and it almost kicked off. There was a bit of wrestling, but I think he knew better than to take a swing at them. He might be a bit of a hard knock on the streets but I think he recognised he hadn't got a chance against the one of the trainers. In the end he just mouthed off and pounced around gesticulating wildly with his hands. You should have seen him though the adrenaline must have been full on because he just couldn't keep still. He looked like a trapped rabbit.

After that he threatened to leave, but they managed to talk him round. But I'm already wondering if he'll stick it out. At the end they showed a clip from the next installment where he blows his top and the trainer has to overpower him again. Hope he doesn't go because I want to see if they can give him some self respect and turn him around like that chap from the last show.

Do you remember that? There was some guy that just couldn't take it seriously and just laughed at everything. But by the end he couldn't do enough for the trainers. And at one point Murray has a word with him and tells him that he's improved that much he'd take him to war with him. The guy was visible knocked off his feet, he could really tell that it must have been the best complement he's ever had.

Good stuff! Dont miss the next one!

yep i remember that ... its fantastic when they realise that this is a real opportunity to turn their lives around and take control and change themselves... sadly some are too scared or blinkered to take that leap

I deal with some of these youngsters (of type) now and again when a bad apple joins up believe it or not. Within a few weeks you can turn most them around with little problem as long as you are firm but fair. in general they lack respect for both themselves and others. They fail to understand the order of life. I have some really good soldiers who were on this slippery path to social disaster. The methods used have changed very little, if it aint broke dont fix it !!

The hard feerless granny robber is easily broken !!! but its not all mr nasty.

Hehehe, cheeky blighter! Actually I dont really go out drinking much, never have. About the only time I have a drink is at weddings, birthdays or when out with friends which isn't that much anymore. I'd rather chill out at home with a good book or a nice game of COD! Its probably a good job too otherwise I'd be a right fat c**t... (To use a Clanman'ism). OK Envoy fatter!
