20 years ago today Olof Palme (swedish prime minister) was shot dead on a snowy sthlm street. (I was actually working about 300 yards away at the time*)

Today one of these little fellas brought birdflu to Sweden.

isnt it strange... it doesnt feel like that shooting was 20 years ago but only a few years ago, yet man city not winning anything seems like an eon ago... perhaps its that bad things that happen stay clearer in your memory and good things you long for it to happen again quickly that make time seem so different in your mind

We get Tufted Ducks in this country shortly - guess bird flu will hit sometime in the next month. And to think I used to like seeing them at the nearby bird reserve.

Bought some duck at Sainsburys the weekend for half price! Wonder if it has anything to do with people not eating it any more?

Anyway, if this bird flu thing mutates, goes airborne and starts laying waste to the human population en masse... I wonder if it'll be anything like that Stephen King novel featuring a superflu? If so where do I find that horny bird at the chemist?

Here's some of the things I've read lately.

They think that the Tufted Ducks have been here since autumn! 8O
Some arrive here then from the russian tiaga. The rest will be arriving from Northern Germany (RĂ¼gen) which is already infected soon.

As long as nobody goes smearing themselves with dead infected birds we'll be ok. Who in our part of the world does that?

The Turkish kids who got it were throwing dead birds to eachother like some kind of game.

Even infected birds are fine to eat as long as they are cooked. (though I wouldn't knowingly do that!)

Bird flu is also nothing new it's been around for as long as our flu bugs have. It's just this strain that is new.

Natures way of getting it's own back perhaps?

Cracking book that one btw Willo "The Stand" wasn't it?

One of the dead infected Tufted Ducks

i seen something about cock fights and the owners sucking the blood out of the throat of the bird so it can fight for longer... that might have been thailand..... which in turn got me thinking, dont the kids over there not just get pissed and take drugs at the weekend like normal teenagers!

I don't think they eat cats and dogs raw Bullit, all bacteria dies at 70 degrees. However if a child eats cat shit then the child is probably going to get it. As cats have a penchant for taking a dump in sand and kids like playing in sand then that scenario isn't hard to imagine happening. Anyone with a cat who is living in an infected area is being urged to keep their cat indoors.

There are already a couple of exclusion zones in Sweden all it means is your car has to drive through a puddle of disinfectant and you can't take poultry in or out of the area, apart from that life goes on as normal.

One of the worst cases I heard was that in Nigeria they killed and buried a few tonnes of infected birds only for the locals to dig em up when the authorities had left. I suppose if people are desperate for food they'll do anything.

I think i'm losing this thread but there again it is very early in the morning, but i think ive managed to glean this out of it, dont eat any bird unless she's hot, and if your doing it to her in the sand don't eat cat shite, is that right ?

See Willo your doing it again...............talking about food, leave it alone for once. 8O 8O .

Lots of people have stopped feeding the birds as well because of this bird flu ,as birds tend to stay near places where the food supply is.
I must say I do like to see them in my garden,of a morning, now I think it makes people a lot more weary of them.

As far as I'm concerned Shift, good food is a perk of living in a developed country! And I want to make the most of it.
