glad you are kind of sorted trust
but it puzzles me why people have such trouble
why do some members have to reinstall/reformat on a fairly regular basis, and others dont?
i know when i first got a good proper pc in 1996 i killed it regularly by messin about with stuff i didnt know about and trying experimental stuff out.. but now i know better and have not had to reformat for years
some of us reformat like every few months or so and some of us never do it.... why? what are we doing so differently?

I don't know why other folk do it at all Pup.
I think this time it had to do with the power cut I had while the pc was on.
It must have screwed up something in windows the pc was slower than a wet weekend after I got it running again. It then just got slower and slower till it wouldn't load at all.
I don't regularly reformat at all. Don't see the point unless a big problem occurs, that a repair wont fix.

I've done one repair install and one reformat/re-install since I went to XP in 2002.
Maybe Jack Dee has the right attitude (NSFW):-

Whats all this raid, motherboards and reformatting gubbins, as long as you talk to the little man inside the black box nicely, everything should be OK.;-)
Tip number 1
Before retiring to bed make sure a ham sandwich and a bottle of green cream soda is left by the pc overnight, It seems to keep the little PC man inside the magic box very happy:mrgreen:
Tip number 2
Always power the PC off at night, this is not a saving the planet tip but the power button keeps the little fellow awake and they can't half be grumpy bastards next day and this can lead to problems, PC slowing down as he's tired and can't run on the treadmill as fast.:-D

As a man more plagued by computer woe than anyone I know I think what contributes is a great deal of ignorance combined with how you think the damned things should work.
So I've got a computer with tons of programs on it for different things (photoshop, paint programs, zbrush etc), a wide variety of games, music stuff and so on and this weird belief that I can chop and change between them as the thoughts occur and strangely enough it crashes a bit. (Even the new pc is bizarrely not so good in Photoshop as the old one was - seems the old pc had a gig more of ram but a slower cpu, the new one has a good core duo cpu and faster but less ram).
I don't know what you guys use your machines for but I swear the wider the variety of tasks combined with ignorance of the mechanics and the more likelyhood you're gonna spend a lot of time reinstalling the OS. :p

Yea know what you mean Maggot I think we have all been there.
I like you use to have all my stuff on my main PC, Photoshop, Paint shop Pro, Poser, plus loads of imaging, complete family history of photos, and editing stuff, thats not including all the heavy metal I have on there either, not forgetting all the games, and cleaners :).
So I got myself a laptop, and removed all my music, and art stuff from the main PC, now it`s faster, and I have more room on me main PC.
I always format every 2 days, and clean all the registry on both pc's, as not so long ago I had my browser hijacked, so I run software for that as well.
Now I find I dont get any problems, "touchwood" .
