From the BBC (about the new Sony PSP ability to play films):

"The forthcoming release of 1984 film Ghostbusters costs £13.99 on UMD from Amazon's UK site but can be bought on DVD for £4.97."

Sony says:

"The pricing reflects the investment behind the new UMD format. In time, that might be reviewed."

Fooking excellent. Now we can all pay 3x the amount for the priviledge of watching the 'same old' on a screen the size of sandwich. Who are these people? No wonder piracy is rife!

When will they learn? Most people are willing to pay a few quid for a pirate version of some DVD film or music CD from a bloke down the pub. We all know that, its a reality. So if these studios dropped prices to similar levels its a dead cert sales would go through the flaming roof. Instead they quote crap like 'price reflects investment', I dont give a toss what the investment was, I want value for money!

Rant over.

Don't get so upset Willo . It's new technology and I guess it cost a few yen to develop. Sony will want to recoup some of the development costs through initial sales. Remember how much DVD's cost when they first hit the shops ? Now they can be bought on-line very economically. I also remember seeing a Plasma 42" TV for the first time only a few years ago in House of Fraser and it cost £10,000. Now you can buy one for a grand.

If this new format takes off then maybe the price will fall. Those people who like to be the early adopters of this technology may go for it and be prepared to pay the relatively high price. So, if you aren't happy..don't buy one, or wait in the hope that the price will drop. :P

wags is right. a business likes to make up what it spent on development and advertising as soon as possible.
they boost the prices up on the release of the item to do this, then in their eyes anything after this is pure profit.

im still waiting for the sega mega-cd's to come back. :D

actually rincewind, you will find Sony are ripping people off because they have that market cornered at the moment. Soon as a worthy competitor arrives on the scene, the prices will drop.

Watch the PS3 v XBOX360 price war, they'll be giving these consoles away (more or less considering the power of each). MS are poised to pip Sony to the post over it's release and they are going to be competativley priced from day 1 to try and leverage away the foot hold that Sony have. There will be little regain in the Dev costs here as MS is prepaired to take losses to win a majority market share.

Wonder if anyone will bring out an OS on CD or whatever to convert these consoles into hybred PCs on the cheap!
