As a mate wants to buy my current monitor (19" LCD analogue), I've been looking for new one within £250-£300. I wanted one which was going to be a step up from the 19", but wasn't going to make my graphics card squeal like Max.

In the end I got this one - Asus MW221U - 22" 16:10 widescreen

Dabs and Overclockers both sell it, but I bought it from my local Comp. Fair - it was within a couple of £ of their prices = £279.

So far it looks great, the native resolution is 1680 x 1050 (old one was 1280 x 1024), I've been experimenting with games to see what they're like.
CoD2 has widescreen support built in, but CoD1 needs the config file editing. You can play games in 4:3 aspect (windowed mode opposed to full-screen), but I want it big, baby.
Most new games have widescreen support and they do look good. I'm gettings good framerates too.

Anyway if you're thinking about getting a widescreen or already have one, check out this site I stumbled on, it has hardware reviews and details on how to enable widescreen in a shedload of games, plus loads more info :-

I think the best Picture I've ever seen on a screen and the one I might get later is this: [Only registered and activated users can see links]

i just gone widescreen aswell m8 cod2 looks great ,company of heroes has never looked better

i was in same price range around £300 looked at reviews and stuff i narrowed it down to either the Asus MW221U or the
samsung 225bw [Only registered and activated users can see links]

after lookin at the reviews and reading forums i went with the samsung althought i dont think theres much between the 2 tbh both run @ 1680x1050 and both run games really really well

once uve gone widescreen i think it would be hard to go back ive got my 19" on the desk at the side of it and it looks tiny

My Diamond Pro 930SB still looks amazingly good. Cant say i have seen an LCD that comes close to it yet. Not entirely sure i am ready to pay good money to downgrade.

I did get a 26" LCD screen (for dvd/divx viewing) just after Xmas, I might hook it up to see what it looks like though.

Before I got the 19" LCD, I had a 19" crt iiyama which was great. However, I had to turn the brightness up to maximum and eventually it become too dark to use for games etc.
So I sold it to Willo for £10 :-)

It's hard to find CRTs these days and if you do the prices are ott.

It's 2" smaller, only analogue- not DVI, slower response time, lower contrast etc.
So there.

You get what you pay for, more so with screens. If you want the best you have to pay the bests prices, but they're always worth it.

Well put it this way, you pay almost twice the price for a mid range Viewsonic as you do a mid range Acer but put them next to each other and you'll see why.

For CoD1

Edit Config_mp.cfg

seta r_customheight "xxx"
seta r_customwidth "xxxx"
Set this to your favourite widescreen resolution. Be careful not to confuse the 'height' and 'width'.

seta r_mode "x"
Set this to -1.

e.g.

seta r_customheight "1050"
seta r_customwidth "1680"
seta r_mode "-1"

The mode setting allows for custom settings.

NB. In single player you can change the FoV (field of vision) from the default 80 to 90 for 16:10 (96 for 16:9)
but not in MP - it's classed as a cheat. seta cg_fov 90

Couldn't agree more mate. It takes some beating and it's a pity that Mitsubishi don't make CRT anymore.

Having said all that I bought my eldest son a 19" Samsung TFT with a 8ms response a year ago and he is well pleased.:sqcool:

I guess that in the near future PC screens will go the way of wide-screen TV and will be the norm.

Bit-tech beg to differ, they voted it the best.
